Zen A starts with echoey summer surf guitars, and something that sounds a hell of a lot like the sea. Although these step out of the light for a bit to let the bass and vocals in, they’re never far away, and neither is the cool sense of a good day in the sun. Listening to this new track from Brooklyn’s Surf Rock is Dead you sometimes can’t help but imagining this could be the sound of the happy goth, dressed in brighter garb, or Interpol if they took time out to ponder life’s pleasures and concluded that it was better to laugh and drink a cold beer than to keep up the stern pretence. And that having so concluded, they flick the happy switch and find a cool new guitar sound, about an octave above their standard.
