When Carry On Up The Charts was released in 1994, and started to do well, this was generally seen as a good thing. After a while, though, people started to think maybe they’d had enough. Well done, Beautiful South, they would say, now take your royalty cheques and just leave us be for a while. But the album kept selling, until people started to get a little hacked off with The Beautiful South. This was a pity, and more than a little bit unfair, because the albums that gave their songs to Carry On… (Welcome To The Beautiful South, Choke, 0898, Miaow) are all, in their own way, perfectly wonderful pop albums, full of melodies that could live in your head forever, and lyrics that were sharp, witty, caustic and wry.
