Having formerly fronted London psych-rockers The Hypnotic Eye, Grace Lightman found herself solo and keen to draw on influences and passions ranging from Vincent Gallo films to Debbie Harry, Francois Hardy and Nico. She met producer San Felu (Liu Bei) and the two bonded over a mutual love of the Twilight Zone and torch songs.

The quite stunning Vapour Trails is the first fruit of their collaboration. At first calm - almost sparse, definitely understated - it becomes orchestral and dramatic, generating a tense energy that resolves itself in the sound of marching drums. Then, just when you might be priming yourself for the inevitable climax, it falls back, refusing to give you the easy closure of the big finish. In a word: spellbinding.
