Franz Ferdinand - Stand on the Horizon
I wasn’t that sold on Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action when I reviewed it last year, but along with the raw and aggressive Bullet, Stand on the Horizon was an undoubted highlight.
The song opens with a lovely gentle guitar passage, before launching into familiar Franz Ferdinand post-punk, disco-punk territory: so far so hum-drum. But then it gradually teases new worlds: there’s a flash of thigh at the end of the first chorus; it’s repeated the second time round, but this time with a little string arrangement over the top, and then suddenly it hits a firm groove in an extended outro where you can really feel the Todd Terje collaboration. In one final switch-up, it bows out acapella.
The video sees Franz Ferdinand performing initially to a largely uninterested dance-hall crowd (sounds familiar, eh? Just kidding…), the night picking up and the interest gradually rising along with the track’s development before band and audience together then opt, rather unusually, for a late-night coastal stroll…
