Paul Simon - You Can Call Me Al
While this piece of lyrical wonder was settling into its top 10 berth, Nick Berry was number 1 with “Every Loser Wins”, a song not even written for a real band (but a band called “The Banned” - see what they did there?), but which nonetheless sold a million copies and led to an Ivor Novello award for composer Simon May, perhaps better known for the Eastenders theme, and perhaps less well known for the Eldoradro theme.
“You Can Call Me Al”, however, features angels in the architecture, spinning in infinity, and other beautiful, beautiful lyrics that I couldn’t help learning as I fell in love with them, and Bakithi Kumalo on bass, who celebrated his birthday in the recording studio by adding *that* bass solo to the track.
And the video features Chevy Chase. Win.
