It’a a good question. Apparently Beck once said it was about a devil’s haircut. It’s as good an explanation as we’re likely to get.

The quote above comes from the Futurama episode “Bendin’ in the Wind”, in which Beck performs with Bender at Bend-aid, a benefit concert for broken robots. It’s highly quotable:

Bender: Hey, yeah, I could write a song! With real words, not phoney ones like “odelay”.

Beck: “Odelay” is a word. Just look it up in the Becktionary.
