When I stumbled across Matt Berry’s wonderful album Kill The Wolf earlier this year I couldn’t help feeling a little foolish for having previously ignored his musical career. Surely, though, I wasn’t the first, and I won’t be the last: the man is, after all, a comic oddball famous mostly for playing larger than life characters of no great reality. The obvious response, then, on seeing that he has a couple of albums, is to assume they’ll be more in that vein, but the weird and ultimately rewarding reality is that Matt Berry is a bona fide song-writer and musician, and on Kill The Wolf he creates and plays with a truly enchanting yet somewhat sinister pastoral world of retro-folk. Think Wicker Man, and you won’t be far off.
