The Gospel Book of Archbishop Ebbo is a three track EP from Philadelphia composer and multi-instrumentalist Patkus, released in January 2015. Bookended by two long pieces that play on the picaresque notion of distinct episodes and abrupt transitions (trust me, I more or less understand the concept…), it’s an intriguing piece of trippy post-rock. Crossing a few genre boundaries here and there, flitting occasionally into rapid jazz chords or playful guitar patterns for example, the constant changes prevent it from flopping into an ambient goo; at the same time Patkus manages to resist the post-rock trope of constantly upping the levels and bursting out into a crowd-pleasing finale.
